Neighborhood News – August 23, 2018

Hi church Family!

This past few weeks, I have been considering what it means to be a community. Every community has glue that holds it together.
The fans who gather at CenturyLink Field on Sundays this fall are glued together by a love for the Seahawks. This time of year, the Olympics and Cascades are filled with people who are glued together with a love for the outdoors and explorations. I know of a group of folks who get together every Wednesday at Shari’s because the share a hankering for conversation and pie.
Our community at Crossroads is no different — we also have a glue. Only our glue has a name, because the glue for our community is a person: Jesus. He is the center piece at the table of faith where He invites sinners (like us) to come and eat. What’s more, He comes to our tables and eats with us, just like He did Levi (Matthew 9:9-10).
Everyone eats and drinks, that is, if they want to keep from dying. But you don’t have to eat with others to survive. Anyone can eat alone. Lots of people do. I wonder if that is why Jesus came to our table, and then invited us to eat and drink from His. He knows that eating and drinking together is a means to truly living. His invitation is much more than avoidance of death. It is an invitation to embrace living by being invited to the Table by the Author of Life.
This Sunday, there is a table that is being set at our Fellowship Feast. We will all bring food of different kinds, and different tastes. We will eat meat and vegetables and fruit and more. We will drink tea and water and such. But there will also be a Feast happening in our midst, because there will be more than just food in our midst. Our Glue will be there, too. In our conversation. In our laughter. In our stories. In our hearts, feeding us and nourishing us with Bread from heaven.
So, as you cut, as you chop, as you cook, know that you are preparing for more than just meal. We are preparing for a Feast that I pray will nourish us to become truly alive, to walk the streets of our neighborhoods and hallways of our workplaces as living, breathing invitations to the Feast where all are invited, and all are welcome.
Hope to see you Sunday,
Pastor Sam
